Onondaga Commons: A Near Westside Story
Article via SYRUP published on OCTOBER 8, 2013 BY
SYRACUSE, NEW YORK -- Community. Revitalization. Density. Three of the first words shared with me by W. Michael Short of Short Enterprises, an innovative Syracuse-based startup, in regards to the large-scale redevelopment efforts he is spearheading in partnership with Martin A. Yenawine and his team at Onondaga Commons, a health and human services campus on the City’s Near Westside.
Dedicated to the success of the Near Westside community, Mr. Yenawine has been investing in the neighborhood for over 30 years. One partnership, and one site at a time, his team has managed to re-develop over 5 acres of formerly vacant property within walking distance of Downtown Syracuse into a community-driven urban success story.
The team at Onondaga Commons has created a formula that has sparked revitalization for the entire neighborhood, which include the highly publicized efforts spearheaded by Syracuse University beginning in 2006. These efforts are leveraging over $70 million in new capital investment in the community.
